Knowing your reading speed helps you plan how long books will take, set realistic daily goals, and track improvement over time. This free calculator measures your pace from a timed reading session — no guesswork required.

Most people measure speed in pages per minute for book planning, or words per minute (WPM) for comparing to standard reading benchmarks. Both methods work; choose whichever fits how you read.

What this reading speed calculator can answer

  • How many pages you read per minute and per hour
  • Your words per minute (WPM) when measuring by word count
  • Whether your speed is slow, average, or fast compared to typical readers
  • A baseline to use in the reading time and goal calculators

How to measure your reading speed

  1. Pick a representative section — a few pages of the kind of book you usually read (fiction, nonfiction, etc.).
  2. Start a timer and read at your normal, comfortable pace. Don't skim or rush.
  3. Stop the timer when finished and note pages read (or word count) and elapsed time.
  4. Enter the numbers here and click Calculate. Optionally add words per page to also see WPM.

Measuring reading speed — an example

You read 5 pages of a novel in 10 minutes. That's 0.5 pages per minute, or 30 pages per hour — a common average pace for fiction.

If each page has about 250 words, that's roughly 125 words in 10 minutes, or 125 WPM.

Use that 0.5 pages/min figure in the reading time calculator to estimate how long a 400-page book will take — about 13 hours total, or 27 minutes per day over 30 days.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average reading speed?

For book reading, many adults read about 0.3–0.5 pages per minute depending on text difficulty. In words per minute, silent reading averages around 200–250 WPM for most adults.

Pages per minute vs words per minute — which should I use?

Use pages per minute when planning books — it matches how reading time calculators work. Use WPM when comparing to standard speed-reading benchmarks or when page density varies a lot.

Does reading speed vary by book type?

Yes. Dense nonfiction, textbooks, and technical material are usually slower than light fiction. Measure speed with a book similar to what you're planning to read for the most accurate estimate.

Can Bookyno track my reading speed over time?

Yes. Bookyno logs pages and duration for every reading session, so you can see your actual pace per book and over time — no manual timing needed.
